The Golden Mahseer, often called the “Indian salmon”, is a legendary cyprinid of the Himalayan rivers. Famous for its fighting spirit, it has inspired anglers since colonial times, to the point that Rudyard Kipling ranked it above the tarpon. Fishing for Mahseer requires a true journey: after flights, train rides, and long mountain tracks, we finally reached the fishing camps on the Saryu and Maha Khali rivers, sometimes under sweltering conditions at this time of year.

The first days of our trip were marked by muddy waters and blanks, but perseverance finally paid off with a nice first catch on day three.

The Mahseer, which inhabits clear and fast waters, does not always offer the fiercest fight, but it demands endurance, accuracy, and patience. It is also increasingly rare, as the guides reminded us on several occasions.
